How Tanzania stacks up

Deciding between Zanzibar and another island, or the Serengeti and the Masai Mara? Side-by-side answers with real numbers, from someone who lives here.

What these comparisons are for

These 14 guides settle the choices that come before a booking: which island, which safari country, which park, which coast. They are for travellers who have narrowed a trip to two options and need a straight answer, with numbers, on which one to pick.

Most travellers end up combining rather than choosing. Zanzibar is the beach leg of a Tanzania trip, which is why many of the island comparisons here finish by showing how the island fits around a safari.

Each comparison ends in a verdict. The figures below are the ones that usually decide it:

  • Island price. Zanzibar starts at USD 30 a night; Maldives overwater bungalows start at USD 600.
  • Park fees. The Serengeti costs USD 82.60 per adult per day; the Masai Mara runs USD 100–200 per day. Ngorongoro is USD 70.80 and Tarangire USD 59.
  • Migration. The Serengeti holds roughly 1.3 million wildebeest, and the river crossings fall between July and October.
  • Getting there. There is a 9-hour nonstop from Frankfurt to Zanzibar, and Zanzibar is about 1 hour by air from Arusha's safari circuit.
  • Two beaches, one decision. Nungwi and Kendwa are 3 km and 15 minutes apart, yet they suit different people.

Which island?

Zanzibar against the other Indian Ocean and Asian beach islands, on price, culture and how easily it combines with a safari.

Which safari country?

Tanzania against Kenya, South Africa and Botswana, on wildlife, cost and how the trip is organised.

Which park?

Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and the Masai Mara, side by side, with entry fees and best months.

Which coast?

Two decisions inside Zanzibar: north or east, and Nungwi or Kendwa.

How to use this section

  • Start with the question that is still open. If you have already chosen Tanzania, skip the country comparisons and go to parks and coasts.
  • Read the verdict first, then the cost table, then the sections for your own priorities.
  • Treat the fees and prices as a starting point and confirm them against your quote, since park tariffs change once a year.
  • Remember the bias. I live on Zanzibar, so I have a real interest in being honest: Mauritius does some things better, and a certain type of traveller should go there. Each guide says plainly where the other place wins.
  • Compare like for like. Put the same month, the same number of nights and the same group size into both options before you read a single price.
  • Finish with the FAQ at the bottom of each guide. It covers the objections that come up most.
