Flying to the Serengeti — when it makes sense

  • Bush planes depart from Arusha Airport (ARK — smaller city airport, not JRO) to Serengeti airstrips: Seronera, Kogatende (northern), Grumeti, Ndutu (wet season) — flight time approximately 1–1.5 hours
  • Operators: Coastal Aviation, Air Excel, Auric Air; both scheduled and charter options exist
  • Flying makes most sense for: short itineraries where the 5–6 hour drive would consume most of a day; when the Serengeti is the primary destination and driving via Ngorongoro would be inefficient; ultra-luxury itineraries
  • Driving makes most sense for: combining Ngorongoro with Serengeti in a single journey; budget trips; when the road journey itself adds game-viewing opportunities (Ngorongoro rim views, Karatu market)
  • A 10-day Northern Circuit safari typically includes: Arusha → Tarangire → Lake Manyara → Ngorongoro → Serengeti → fly/drive back

An overnight or extra night in Arusha

Most Northern Circuit itineraries build in a first night in Arusha (arrival day) and a last night after returning from the parks. If your itinerary gives you an unplanned extra day, here are the worthwhile options:

Arusha National Park — half-day from the city

Arusha National Park sits on the slopes of Mount Meru (Tanzania's second-highest peak at 4,562 m) and is one of Tanzania's most underrated parks. It is 20–30 minutes from central Arusha. Key things the park offers:

  • Black-and-white colobus monkeys (habituated troops visible from the road)
  • Flamingos and other waterbirds on Momella Lakes (seasonal — most reliable November–April)
  • Ngurdoto Crater: a small volcanic crater with buffalo and warthog visible from the rim (no vehicles allowed on the floor)
  • Walking safaris (guided) inside the park — one of few Tanzania parks where this is possible near Arusha

Cultural Heritage Centre

The Cultural Heritage Centre on the Dodoma road is a large combined arts centre, coffee shop, and curio market. It is widely cited as the best single place in Arusha to buy quality Tanzanian crafts (Tingatinga paintings, Maasai beadwork, Makonde carvings). Prices are high but the quality is also higher than street market items. Allow 1–2 hours.

Arusha town market

The central market (Sokoni) is a good morning visit for a real Tanzanian city market experience. Arrive before 10am; it is busiest and most photogenic in the early hours. Keep standard market precautions (watch pockets, no expensive camera on open display).

Practical — connections, costs, common questions

Arriving from Nairobi

Several shuttle services operate daily between Nairobi and Arusha. One-way fares run approximately USD 25–30; journey time is 7–9 hours depending on traffic and border crossing speed at Namanga. This is a popular route for travellers combining Kenya (Maasai Mara) and Tanzania (Serengeti/Northern Circuit) — the bus is more economic and often more convenient than flying.

Arriving from Dar es Salaam

The Kilimanjaro Express luxury bus between Arusha/Moshi and Dar es Salaam costs approximately USD 16 (36,000 TZS) and takes approximately 12 hours. Flying from JRO to DAR takes approximately 1 hour but costs significantly more. The overnight bus is a reasonable budget option for the stretch.

Tanzania park fee overview (2024/25)

TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks) non-resident adult fee schedule: Serengeti USD 83/day; Nyerere USD 80/day; most other TANAPA parks USD 80/day. Ngorongoro (NCAA, not TANAPA) is separate: USD 70.80/day plus the USD 295 crater descent fee. Fees are included in all-inclusive safari packages — verify this when comparing quotes.

Climate

Arusha receives approximately 1,125 mm of annual rainfall. April is the wettest month (~340 mm). The city has a more temperate climate than the coast due to its elevation (~1,400 m) — evenings can be cool, especially in June–August (the dry season also brings the coldest temperatures at altitude).

Arusha — questions answered

How far is Arusha from Kilimanjaro Airport?

Approximately 50.6 km, 45–60 minutes by car. Taxi cost approximately USD 17–21. Most safari operators include this transfer in their packages — confirm when booking.

How do you get from Arusha to the Serengeti?

Drive (~335 km, 5–6 hours via Ngorongoro — the standard Northern Circuit route) or fly from Arusha Airport (ARK) on a bush plane (~1–1.5 hours, Coastal Aviation, Air Excel). Driving is slower but passes through Ngorongoro and gives more game-viewing en route.

Is Arusha worth staying in?

As a transit hub, yes — 1–2 nights is standard. As a destination, it has Arusha National Park (half-day, Mount Meru, colobus monkeys, flamingos) and the Cultural Heritage Centre (quality crafts). It is not a destination comparable to the parks, but a functional and agreeable city if you have an extra day.

What is Arusha National Park?

A smaller, underrated park 20–30 min from the city, on the slopes of Mount Meru (4,562 m). Notable for black-and-white colobus, flamingos on Momella Lakes, the Ngurdoto Crater, and walking safaris. Day trips possible from central Arusha.
