What this section covers
This section answers one question: how do a Tanzania safari and a Zanzibar beach stay fit into a single trip that works? It is written for first-time visitors with roughly 7 to 14 days, who want one sensible route rather than a menu of forty. Everything here comes from the island, not from a research visit.
Five decisions decide almost every trip, and the guides below take them in this order:
- How many days you have. The 7-day plan covers the northern circuit only. The 10-day plan puts 3 days on Zanzibar after 7 on safari. The 14-day plan gives the Serengeti all three of its zones and Zanzibar 4 days.
- When you travel. June to October is the dry season: clear skies on the coast, the easiest game viewing inland, and the highest prices.
- The order. Safari first, beach second. Early starts and long drives belong at the front of the trip, and the east coast is the right place to sleep in afterwards.
- The money. Park fees are the part nobody can discount. Per adult per day they are currently USD 82.60 in the Serengeti, USD 70.80 in Ngorongoro and USD 59 in Tarangire, and a visa is USD 50 on arrival for most nationalities.
- The logistics. Arusha to Zanzibar is about one hour by air, the airport-to-hotel transfer on the island takes 15 minutes to 1h20 depending on the coast, and bush flights limit you to a soft bag of 15 kg.

- Open the itinerary closest to your number of days and read only its day-by-day plan first.
- Check the migration timing and the entry rules for your travel month before you book flights.
- Use the transfer table to test your plan. If a day needs a 1h20 road transfer after a morning flight, move it.
- Ask for an itemised quote. My rule, from the operator guide: "Can you send me an itemized version with park fees, guide, vehicle, and lodging on separate lines?" A serious operator produces this in minutes. One that stalls is telling you something.
- Keep the beach in one place. The best Zanzibar trips I have seen involve picking one base and day-tripping from it, not island-hopping between hotels every two nights.
- Settle entry last: the visa is USD 50 on arrival for most nationalities, and the entry guides list the documents you need.
