Zanzibar — East Coast
The east coast is my territory. Four distinct villages on the Indian Ocean lagoon — each suits a different kind of traveller, and each has a different relationship with the tides.
The tidal range here is 2.5–3.5 m at spring tides. On the open east-coast beaches, the water retreats 400 m to 1 km at low tide. Every accommodation decision should factor this in.

Tanzania safari accommodation divides into three main types: permanent tented camps (canvas walls, permanent platforms and services — the most common), mobile camps (strike and rebuild following the migration), and lodges (permanent stone or wood buildings). The distinction matters less than location within the park ecosystem — a well-positioned mid-range camp beats a luxury lodge on the wrong side of the Serengeti for morning game drives.
Key principles for choosing:
- Serengeti is 14,750 km² — position within the park determines what migration action you see. Central and northern Seronera for year-round, northern Kogatende for July–October river crossings, southern Ndutu for December–March calving.
- Ngorongoro Crater rim camps all give similar crater access; the quality split is on service and food rather than location.
- Tarangire: camps inside the park beat those outside significantly — the river frontage is where the elephant herds concentrate in the dry season.
- The "Big Five guarantee" framing is a marketing tactic. Focus on which camp is best positioned for your target experience.

Which east coast village is best for a honeymoon?
Michamvi Pingwe is the most secluded and romantic option — small boutique properties, the deepest water on the east coast, and sunset-facing coves. How long do I need on the east coast vs on safari?
The classic split for a 10-day trip: 3–4 nights on the northern safari circuit (Serengeti + Ngorongoro), one short bush flight, then 4–5 nights on the east coast. Do I need to book far in advance for the east coast?
For peak season (June–October), boutique properties with fewer than 10 rooms — including Matlai — fill months in advance. January–February is more flexible. School holiday periods (UK/German summer, Christmas–New Year) are the tightest. For Serengeti camps during river-crossing season (July–October), 6–12 months out is not unusual for the top-positioned camps.
