Kendwa
Calmer than Nungwi, louder than Matemwe. Kendwa Beach has the same tide-free swimming advantage as the rest of the north coast, the monthly Full Moon Party, and a pace that sits between lively resort and genuine retreat. Here's what it's actually like.

Kendwa vs Nungwi — the honest version
This question comes up constantly, so here is a direct answer:
Choose Nungwi if you want: a wider range of accommodation and restaurants, the turtle sanctuary, the fish market, dolphin trips, more dive operators, and a livelier evening scene. Nungwi has more to do — both in terms of facilities and in terms of village character.
Choose Kendwa if you want: fewer beach vendors, a calmer atmosphere, the Full Moon Party, and a pace where beach time is the main activity. Kendwa is better for couples who want to unwind and don't need a full programme of things to do. It is also slightly cheaper on average.
Both villages have essentially the same tides — the beach is swimmable all day at either. The distance between them is 2 km; a tuk-tuk connects them in 10 minutes. Many travellers base in one and visit the other for a day or an evening, which is easy and sensible.
For diving, both give access to Mnemba Atoll, though Matemwe is the faster and cheaper base for the atoll itself.
Tides at Kendwa
Kendwa shares the north coast's defining practical advantage: minimal tidal range. The beach retreats only 30–50 metres at low water — negligible compared to the 400-metre-plus pull on Zanzibar's east coast. The entire Kendwa beach is swimmable throughout the day, at any state of the tide.
This means no early-morning scramble to catch swimming hours, no waiting out a low-tide flat, and no need to check a tide app before walking down to the water. For many travellers this is the single most important practical difference between the north and east coasts.
→ East coast guide if you want the kite-surfing scene, a more local atmosphere, or cheaper accommodation — with the trade-off of tide-dependent swimming.
