The four villages
The east coast runs south from the airport transfer road down through four distinct settlements. Each suits a different kind of traveller.
Paje
Kitesurfing · Social · LivelyEast Africa's kitesurfing capital and the liveliest stretch of the coast. The flat-water lagoon at low tide is what kite school operators travel the world looking for, and from June through October the beach is busy with kiters. Beach bars, a young international crowd, and a social evening scene. If you are here to kite or to meet people, this is your village.

Quiet · Authentic · Local villageA long, traditional fishing village stretched along a beautiful beach. Slower, quieter, and more locally rooted than Paje — dhow builders still work on the shore, and the seaweed-farming cooperative is one of the most photographed sights on the coast. It suits travellers who want to experience Zanzibar life rather than watch it from a resort pool.

Calm · Low-key · In betweenCalm and low-key, sitting between Paje and Michamvi. Bwejuu has a handful of small guesthouses and hotels but relatively few tourists — the beach is wide, the tides pull back impressively here, and it remains one of the less-visited stretches. A good choice if you want quiet without full seclusion.

Boutique · Secluded · Deeper waterThe boutique end of the east coast — a small peninsula with coves that face west toward the sunset and a bay that holds water closer to the shore at low tide than most of the lagoon. This is where Boutique-Hotel Matlai sits. Quieter than Paje, more polished than Jambiani, and the most swimmable east-coast location at low tide.

The east coast has a substantial tidal range — around 2.5 to 3.5 metres at spring tides. When the tide goes out, it goes far: sometimes 400 metres, on a big spring tide closer to a kilometre. The lagoon that looked postcard-perfect at 8am can be a shining flat of seagrass by 10am.
Most first-time visitors are briefly thrown by this. Experienced east-coast travellers treat it as a rhythm. Low tide is not lost time:
- Reef walk — a guided walk on the exposed flats reveals starfish, urchins, anemones and small reef life you'd never see from a boat.
- Kitesurfing — Paje's flat-water kite conditions are directly a product of the low-tide lagoon. The wind and the shallow water together create one of East Africa's great kite spots.
- Walking the flats — the tide-out mirror at dawn is the thing I never tire of. Walk out a few hundred metres and you are surrounded by water and horizon.
- Snorkelling off the sandbar — at certain points of the low-tide cycle the reef edge comes within range; guides know where.
Practical advice: Check the tide times for your specific travel dates before booking. They shift through the month — some weeks you'll get swimmable water most of the morning, other weeks the tide is out by 7am. For always-swimmable water, choose Michamvi Pingwe (deeper bay) or any hotel with a pool. And budget for a sunset high tide: the east coast at high water, with the lagoon full and the sky going amber, is hard to beat.

Is the east coast of Zanzibar better than the north?
It depends on what you want. The north (Nungwi, Kendwa) has minimal tides and swimmable water all day — busier and more built up. The east coast is quieter, more authentic and better value, with the world-class kitesurfing in Paje — at the cost of a bigger tidal range. Many travellers prefer the east coast for atmosphere; the north if they want guaranteed swimming depth at any hour.
Can you swim at low tide on the east coast?
On the open beaches the water retreats significantly at low tide, so swimming is limited to the high-tide window. Around Michamvi Pingwe the bay holds water closer for longer. Most hotels have a pool. Always check tide times for your specific dates — they shift through the month.
What is there to do at low tide?
Plenty. A guided reef walk reveals starfish, urchins and reef life on the exposed flats. Kitesurfing in Paje is at its best with the wind and shallow flat water. The flats at dawn are stunning to walk — the tide-out mirror at 6am is the east coast at its most dramatic.
Which east-coast village should I stay in?
Paje for kitesurfing and a lively social scene. Jambiani for a quiet, authentic fishing-village feel. Bwejuu for calm and fewer crowds. Michamvi Pingwe for boutique seclusion, the most swimmable water on the east side, and sunset-facing coves.
How long is the transfer from Zanzibar airport to the east coast?
Allow 55–70 minutes by road from ZNZ (Abeid Amani Karume International). A private transfer costs approximately USD 50–65 depending on the village and operator. The road is sealed most of the way but can slow with traffic. → Full transfers guide

June through October is the dry season — clear skies, the Kusi south-east trade wind (peak kite season), and the Indian Ocean relatively calm.
